Devis at Congressional Internet Caucus – February 2006

The Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee held its annual Kick-Off meeting and conference on February 8, 2006. Devis was invited to demonstrate at the Technology Fair in the Senate Dirksen Building on how open source software is being used to enhance eGovernment. Devis used the occasion to focus on the recent re-launch of the President's DNA Initiative web site – DNA.GOV. This program provides funding, training, and assistance to ensure that forensic DNA reaches its full potential to solve crimes, protect the innocent, and identify missing persons. The DOJ's National Institute of Justice uses the re-architected DNA.GOV to present a unified, cross-government, resource for this important work.

In collaboration with the Federal government Devis has pioneered technology to cost-effectively allow for distributed Web content management so that Agencies and experts can work together to present one view to the public. The DNA.gov effort builds on the open source EZRO product developed by Devis and released under the open source General Public License or GPL.

"At Devis we are pleased that our open source, public infostructure, approach has lead to software re-use without licensing fees to the Government. And we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring this message to thought leaders in Congress. DNA.gov, containing both content and structured learning, can now be maintained directly by subject matter experts, without HTML coding, using 100% open source software." said Peter Gallagher, Devis President. Devis also participated at the Fair in previous years working with George Washington University's Center of Open Source and Government in 2003 the American Federation for the Blind in 2001.

Other demonstrators included Fujitsu, Accenture, Verisign, and both large and small companies. In addition to showing how the EZRO Web content management technology works Devis answered questions about the open source model and distributed a brief DNA.gov summary.
